Description
Nordic custom-manufactures hold down spacers for slitting and processing lines. Used primarily for spacing separator disks on arbors, our spacers are designed for the demands of both harsh thick gauge applications and surface critical thin gauge applications. Because of the nature of the post-slitting rewind application, spacers are meant to be sacrificial so that your slit materials are not damaged. Our materials have been field tested for 30 years and have proven to be superior. What sets our overarm spacers apart is that all the surfaces are machined so you get accurate setups.
We can also manufacture grooves in the OD of wider spacers for use in installing metal banding during coil packaging.
Types
We manufacture spacers from 2 different materials
Phenolic
- A composite, fiber reinforced material
- Tan in color
- Hard and long wearing
- Resistant to heat
- Resistant to pick up of chips and slivers
Nylon
- A homogeneous plastic material
- Available in various colors
- Softer and less likely to mar or scratch processed material
- Not to be used in applications where separator disks get warm.
Usage
- Overarms
- Tensions Stands
- Recoiler stands
- Underarms
- Entry Pit and Exit Pit Rollers
We also manufacture non-metal separator disks from phenolic and nylon for special purpose applications. Available with and without a taper.
Ordering Information
Information Required for Quotes and Orders
1. Outside Diameter
For new sets, this should match the diameter of where your taper starts on your separator disks. For fill in order to be used with existing sets, please provide the current OD of the existing spacers so they will match.
2. Inside Diameter
Should match the OD size of your arbor. We will automagically add a clearance to fit on your shaft. Be careful of adding a clearance on your own. Clearances required for this product are going to be different than other items in your plant due to the nature of the material and the application.
3. Material Type, Phenolic or Nylon
Contact us for advice on this selection.
4. Quantities of each thickness
5. Banding Groove dimensions, width and depth
Please provide the width and thickness of the banding. We will add clearances.

Common Questions
Why do you call it phenolic?
Phenolic is the generic term for the commonly used trademarked name of Micarta™. Phenolic is also called various trade names that end in “tex”. Some people call it “fiber spacers” or the woody looking stuff.
Why do you call it nylon?
Nylon is the now generic term for the formerly trademarked name Nylon. In the slitting world, it is sometimes referred to as “plastic” (not particularly descriptive). Outside the US, it is sometimes called by its chemical name polyamide.
Do you offer metric size spacers?
Sure. No problem.
I need something besides 1/16”, 1/8”, 1/4”, etc. Can you make them?
Sure. We can make any thickness or width you need. We can even make dedicated width tooling so you can put in 1 piece 1.9388” wide so you don’t have to use a 1” and 1/2” and 1/4” and 1/8” and 1/16” and 1/32” spacer to make that special setup that you need every day.
Technical Advice
Choosing the correct material type, phenolic versus nylon.
The choice between using phenolic and nylon is determined by the type of material that you slit. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Neither phenolic or nylon will do every possible type of coil product well. They are certainly not interchangeable. If you are slitting a wide range of material, you might need to have both types of spacers in your arsenal.
We have extensive experience in recommending these materials for different applications. Feel free to contact us to discuss your particular needs, or solving your particular problems.
Difference between banding spacers and banding grooves
Spacers can be provided with a groove cut into the OD to accept banding or strapping. These are called banding groove spacers.
Alternatively, you can use an individual spacer sized to match the width of your banding, which has a reduced size OD compared to the rest of the spacers. These are called banding spacers.
Both methods have advantages which we’d be happy to discuss with you.
The challenges of using thin spacers
Very thin spacers (1/8” thick and thinner) can be a challenge. Thin spacers are the first to break. And, looping pits seem to be a magnet for them. Since spacers are custom manufactured, it's often best to consider getting a few more of the thin pieces when you are ordering a new set.
Many facilities are using our .030” Coral and .060” Clear shims for thin spacers. They are a fraction of the cost of machined phenolic and nylon spacers and are color coded for identification.
If you are worried about the thin spacers standing proud of the others, consider having the thin spacers made to a slightly smaller OD size than the rest of the pieces.
Alternatively, you can consider using wider spacers in intermediate sizes. What do we mean?
